...are UNCW's unofficial faculty rock band - educators by day and rockers by night.
It's been a great run of almost 20 years but the Schoolboys are ready to graduate to their next phase of music and life.
We've really enjoyed playing for our fans all of these years and are thankful for all of the great people we've met - from Southport to Mayfaire, from the Battleship to the Whiskey to Buffalo Wild Wings, from Statesboro, GA to Snead's Ferry, all over UNCW from Midnight Madness and Fanfest to CHHS Convocation and Thursday Music on the Quad.
While Trask Auditorium and Mars were our most cavernous venues, our five members often crammed ourselves into a booth-and-a-half at places like Fox & Hound, Paddy's Hollow, Henry's and Shanache (ask one of us if you want to know about a Shanache goodnight). We didn't mind, it just made us closer.
WECT - we absolutely loved playing the WB Sounds of Summer Concert Series! Thanks for having us! Sound Wave Audio - you guys are awesome!
Rock for the Cure! Our favorite gig every single year for the past 12 years, bar none. Thanks so much to Jennifer Chin and her crew of CSS students for pulling that together and making it run like clockwork. What a wonderful way to celebrate community and raise $50,000 for the NHCRMC Pink Ribbon program. We're proud to have been a part of it and will always remember those nights on the roof of Reel Cafe.
We contend that just because several businesses went dark after we played there, it wasn't our fault. RIP Sunset Cafe, Shanache, Mars, Rhino Club and that place out on Market St. that now sells yachts. Sheer coincidence, I tell ya. That's our story and we're sticking with it.
Hey Paddy's Hollow, we're sorry we played so loud we shook the pizza store upstairs and three doors down. We were young and impetuous. But ya didn't have to ban us?! And Bluewater Grill - you shouldn't charge bands $4 per Bud Light can on a hot summer day, that's a crime on three counts.
Immense thanks to past members Art Gowan, Dave Bollinger, Mario Maningas and Fletcher Norris. Debo Cox and Brock Snyder - we hope you are doing well wherever you are. Stunt drummers Kevin Ponnett, Ken White, David Pernell, Mike Walker, Zack Pendergras and John Cottle - thanks for bringing the backbeat when James couldn't be there. We appreciate it.
We've played in front of several thousand and in front of...several. Regardless, we've always given it our best effort and had fun playing music that we enjoy and that hopefully you did, too. Thanks for coming along for the ride.
The 'Boys have been playing classic, Southern and blues rock since about 1998 from one end of the Cape Fear to the other. Formed to play at a faculty/staff talent show, the band has continued their adventure playing weddings, birthdays, pubs, bars, restaurants, Kentucky Derby parties and 7 Rock for a Cure fundraisers - anywhere with an electrical outlet and a need to rock. Grey around the edges but young at heart, the Schoolboys continue amazing their students who are impressed that "Hey, you guys don't suck."
Here's the band line-up:
Rick Olsen sings lead and plays keyboard and harmonica. His blues-tinged voice really shines with the band's covers of artists like Joe Cocker and Marc Broussard.
Frank Trimble sings lead and plays guitar. He is our main vocal arranger and his versatile tenor voice brings incredible range to songs by groups such as the Eagles, Three Dog Night and our more contemporary covers like Paolo Nutini.
Bill Bolduc plays lead guitar and sings with the sincere appeal of rock's old souls. A devoted student of six-string TRUTH, Bill nails the sweet spots and blue notes with smooth versatility and joy while adding a bit of get-down funk to the mix. His eclectic tastes run widely, embracing everything from Stealers Wheel to the Allman Bros., from Chuck Berry to Springsteen. Link to Bill's Faculty Webpage.
James Hunt has provided the beat for the 'Boys since the earliest days. "Adaptable" best describes James' style as he applies his steady beats and fun digressions to everything from '60s ballads to The Beatles to Tom Petty. King of the "arena-ending" James brings vigor and fire to the back beat.
Bill DiNome lays down the bass lines like no other. A musician's musician, Bill is a super arranger who has added significant texture to the band's arrangements. Finding a way to weave the Shaft bass line into a CCR classic is nothing short of amazing. In fact, like Shaft, BD is cool, smooth and powerful.
